One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
